Build in wood. Mend in wood.
Move it in wood.

From new timber houses in local cedar and cypress to the restoration and relocation of old farmhouses — and shops, ryokan, clinics, civic buildings, thatched roofs and the conservation of National Historic Sites. Since 1990, 135 works built on a single idea.

A home changes as a family grows. Think in centuries, and it serves three generations — so we work in Japanese timber, not imports, and let the structure breathe. New build, renovation, relocation: to us, one continuous practice.

A Series — Souan

連作|草菴

Souan, a ryokan at Yunokawa Onsen, is a group of buildings assembled from relocated old farmhouses. Across 10 projects from 2004 onward, Esumi Atelier shaped it building by building — from Restaurant Suzuna (a Taisho-era kominka relocated from Gifu) to the detached rooms, the thatched gate and Shiunkaku. One long story.

An Atelier in a Restored Kominka

古民家を再生したアトリエ

Our workplace is a 300-year-old farmhouse we restored ourselves. From the Izumo Koshi Kominka School we survey empty houses, conserve thatched roofs, and run CitySwitch international exchanges — staying close to the continuity of living and landscape, beyond design alone. We welcome interns.
